Here's our journalist and Underground Chronicler Christian Lamothe's recap of Day 3 of the 2025 edition of Sonum Fest in Quebec City.

Voici le récapitulatif de notre journaliste et Chroniqueur de l’Underground, Christian Lamothe, sur le jour 3 de l’édition 2025 du Sonum Fest à Québec.

On le sait, dans la région 04, le punk rock, on prend ça au sérieux.

Des artistes comme 2Fast4U, We told You So, Seventy Minus One, U. Seed et plusieurs autres sont un standard d’excellence de cette musique.

À la fin de l’année 2024, la formation trifluvienne Sixty-Five Sixty sort son album éponyme et depuis cumule de nombreux amateurs avec leur punk rimes et musique.

Ce soir ils nous arrivent sous la fumée, les lumières stroboscopiques et une trame sonore pour se lancer avec leur pièce Hiding Something. Hugues Marchand se déplace, mais aime bien être sur son montoir central tel un césar qui regarde la plèbe. Les guitaristes mettent du mordant tant à leur instrument qu’aux ‘’back vocals’’. On donne une performance canon sur Almost Dead, Keeping promises et Trigger.

Mais pour moi, Darkness in your heart, probablement la plus brutale de l’album, va chercher l’intérêt, même chez les amateurs de son plus metal tout en restant accessible au puriste punk rock.

We know that in the 04 region, punk rock is taken seriously.

Artists like 2Fast4U, We told You So, Seventy Minus One, U. Seed and many others set the standard for excellence in this music.

At the end of 2024, Sixty-Five Sixty from Trois-Rivières released their eponymous album, and since then, they've been racking up fans with their punk rhymes and music.

Tonight they arrive under smoke, strobe lights and a soundtrack to kick off with their piece Hiding Something. Hugues Marchand moves around, but likes to stand on his central stand like a Caesar looking down on the plebs. The guitarists put some bite into their instruments and back vocals. Almost Dead, Keeping Promises and Trigger are all great performances.

But for me, Darkness in your heart, probably the most brutal of the album, will appeal even to fans of a more metal sound, while remaining accessible to the punk rock purist.

Voici le compte rendu de Christian Lamothe lors du spectacle de Jerkswitch et Twenty Five Sixty à la Taverne Royale de Trois-Rivières le 7 février 2025.

J’ appris que ceux-ci vont faire partie de la méga liste de groupes présents au dernier soir du Sonum Fest à Québec, soit le 17 mai. Même si cette carte a des styles variés, j’étais content, mais aussi surpris de voir un groupe punk rock en faire partie. En même temps, Twenty-Five Sixty, c’est hard et en commençant avec Hiding Something, qui roule avec des riffs metal tout prend son sens, ça part bien le spectacle et ça va brasser le vieux Québec dans quelques mois.

Ce groupe de la Mauricie, des travaillants qui sont déjà sur l’écriture du prochain album, nous amène une nouvelle pièce ce soir: So Complicated, qui s’insère très bien parmi les autres titres. La chanson Don’t Walk Away a tellement de coffre en spectacle, elle devient probablement celle qui gagne le plus à écouter en salle. Hugues donne une superbe prestation pour l’élever à son fin potentiel.

La chanson qui nous amène un peu de soleil californien, Ghost in Paradise, probablement la chanson la plus pop du groupe, fait une légère coupure agréable, qui serait une pièce parfaite pour combien de séries américaines pour ados…je lance l’idée, qui sait? Mais trêve de marketing, on repart avec une nouvelle pièce du répertoire Network, on se comprend, nous ne sommes officiellement pas dans une ballade. Le frontman du groupe l’avouera à la fin du spectacle que d’assimiler ces nouvelles pièces en plus de tournée, est un tout un challenge. Pour Twenty-Five Sixty, des défis, ça leur donne faim, de musique, de public et de tournée. Trigger, avec sa vidéo, nous est bien connue et est très bien rendue. Sans que l’on s’en aperçoive, notre première partie est déjà terminée. Prochain spectacle le 17 février à Saint-Augustin, en compagnie de Try Again et Meathead Acoustique pour le premier événement des samedis punk du St-Aug!

I've learned that they're going to be part of the mega-list of bands on the last night of Sonum Fest in Quebec City, on May 17. Although the line-up is varied in style, I was pleased, but also surprised, to see a punk rock band on it. At the same time, Twenty-Five Sixty is hardcore, and starting with Hiding Something, which rolls with metal riffs, everything makes sense. It's a good start to the show, and it's going to rock old Quebec in a few months' time.

This band from the Mauricie region, who are already working on their next album, bring us a new song tonight: So Complicated, which fits in very well with the other tracks. The song Don't Walk Away has so much going for it live, it's probably the one that's most worth listening to indoors. Hugues gives a superb performance to elevate it to its full potential.

The song that brings us a bit of Californian sunshine, Ghost in Paradise, probably the band's most pop song, makes a pleasant break, which would be a perfect piece for how many American teen series...I'm just throwing the idea out there, who knows? But enough marketing, we're off again with a new piece from the Network repertoire, we understand each other, we're officially not in a ballad. The band's frontman will admit at the end of the show that assimilating these new pieces on top of touring is quite a challenge. For Twenty-Five Sixty, challenges make them hungry for music, audiences and touring. Trigger, with its video, is well known to us and is very well rendered. Before we know it, our opening act is already over. Next show on February 17 in Saint-Augustin, with Try Again and Meathead Acoustique for the first St-Aug punk Saturdays event!

Commençant sur une intro enregistrée, les musiciens de Twenty Five Sixty, commencent à jouer les uns après les autres. Quelques instants plus tard, c'est le chanteur qui débarque sur scène avec deux personnes déguisées en one piece noir avec les chandails du groupe. Servant de mascottes, ils sont descendus vite de la scène pour aller tenter de lancer un thrash dans le public. Nous offrant un punk rock avec certain riff inspiré du thrash, leur son est intéressant. Les back vocals sont assurés par un des guitaristes et également un bassiste. Ce que je trouvais un peu dommage, c'est que les micros n'étaient pas assez forts par moment et qu'on entendait beaucoup plus la mélodie que les back vocals. Honnêtement, si vous voulez soutenir la scène punk émergente, je vous conseille fortement ce groupe. Sachez également que leur vraie mascotte est une magnifique peluche de cochon.

Starting with a recorded intro, the musicians of Twenty Five Sixty begin to play one after the other. Moments later, the singer took to the stage with two people dressed in black one-pieces with the band's sweaters. Serving as mascots, they quickly descended from the stage to attempt to throw a thrash into the audience. Offering us punk rock with some thrash-inspired riffs, their sound is interesting. Back vocals are provided by one of the guitarists and also a bassist. What I thought was a bit of a shame was that the microphones weren't loud enough at times, and you heard much more of the melody than the back vocals. Honestly, if you want to support the emerging punk scene, I highly recommend this band. And don't forget that their real mascot is a magnificent stuffed pig!

Racontez-moi la courte ou la longue histoire de votre rencontre en tant que groupe ?

-Luc et Hugh ont eu l'idée de monter un groupe de punk il y a 3 ans. Ghis, Julien et Eric ont rejoint le groupe et c'est ainsi que tout a commencé.

Les membres ont-ils toujours été les mêmes ? Parlez-moi un peu de chacun d'entre eux, de leur âge, de leur travail et de quelque chose de négatif à propos de chacun d'entre eux.

-Oui. Tous les membres originaux depuis le début. Luc est un pro de l'action avec beaucoup de qualités qui aident le groupe. Ghis est un bon photographe avec son téléphone portable ! Il est très attentif à la qualité de nos photos. Hugh est le gars qui parle tout le temps à tout le monde ! C'est un très bon chanteur avec beaucoup d'expérience. C'est aussi un grand écrivain. Eric a joué dans de nombreux groupes de métal dans le passé. Il est guitariste, bassiste et batteur. Il a beaucoup d'expérience avec les sons de studio et c'est notre producteur qui a enregistré notre premier album. Julien est un super guitariste et c'est un bon compositeur pour le groupe. Il a été chanteur dans un autre groupe par le passé.

Avez-vous d'autres groupes à côté de Twenty Five Sixty ?

-Il y a des projets parallèles pour beaucoup d'entre nous. Mais c'est juste pour s'amuser et rien n'est encore sorti.

Comment se porte la scène punks au Canada en ce moment ?

-C'est difficile à dire. Comme vous le savez, le Canada est un pays immense. Nous ne connaissons pas tous les groupes du pays. Mais dans notre ville et tout autour, il y a beaucoup de groupes punks avec lesquels nous avons joué et beaucoup d'entre eux sont géniaux.

Quand vous avez commencé à jouer, avez-vous joué vos propres chansons ou avez-vous commencé par des reprises, si c'est le cas, quelles sont les reprises que vous avez jouées à l'époque et en jouez-vous aujourd'hui ?

-Nous avons commencé à jouer nos propres chansons au début. Maintenant, nous avons ajouté 2 ou 3 reprises dans notre set.

J'ai entendu dire que vous étiez influencés par de nombreux styles de punkrock et d'autres styles, etc. Quel est votre style de punk préféré ?

-Oui, beaucoup d'entre nous écoutent beaucoup de genres différents. Mais je pense que le meilleur style de Punk que nous partageons ensemble est Rise Against.

Tell me the short or the long story how you did come together as a band?

-Luc and Hugh had the idea of starting a Punkband 3 years ago. Ghis, Julien and Eric joined the band and this is how it's been started.

Have it always been the same members? Tell me a little about every member, age, work and something bad about every one

-Yes. All original members from the beginning. Luc is a pro action guy with a lot of qualities that help the band tho. Ghis is a nice picture guy with his cellphone ! He got eyes for quality of our picture. Hugh is the guy who talk everytime to everyone ! He is a very great singer with a lot of experience. He's a great writer too. Eric had a lot of metals bands in the past. He is a guitarist, bassist and a great drummer. He has a lot of experiences with studio sounds and this is our producer that recorded our first album. Julien is a great guitarist and he is a nice writer for the band. He had another band in the past as a singer.

Do you have any other bands on the side of Twenty Five Sixty?

-There is side project on the side for many of us. But it's just for fun and nothing has been released yet.

How is the punkscene living on in Canada right now?

-It's hard to say.. As you know Canada is a huge country. We do not know every band in the entire Canada. But in our city and all around there are many punkbands that we played together and a lot of them are amazing.

When you started to play, did you do your own songs at once or did you start with some covers, if you did which covers did you played then and do play any covers nowadays?

-We started to play our own songs at the beginning. Now we added 2 or 3 cover songs in our set now.

I hear that you have influences of many styles of punkrock and other styles etc? Favoritpunkstyle?

-Yes many of us has a lot of genre that we listen to. But I think the best style of Punk that we share together is Rise Against.
